Foreign Film Series: The Teacher

This month's film is the 2016 Czech comedy/drama, “The Teacher.” In this dark satire about governance and human nature, a new teacher in a middle school classroom in 1983 Bratislava assigns grades depending on the favors received from parents. The teacher nearly always maintains a kindhearted veneer, even at her most venal. After a student attempts suicide the effort to fire the teacher stalls because of her political connections. With the future of all the families at stake, the film examines how each family must wrestle with standing up for what they believe in or silently keep the status quo.
