WPB Hits Hole-in-One, Taps Developer to Revitalize Historic, Municipal Golf Course

Renovations Set for Historic West Palm Beach Golf Course

At a meeting of the City of West Palm Beach Special Golf Commission on February 12, 2018, the City tapped West Palm Beach Golf Links, LLC./American Links West Palm Beach for redevelopment of the West Palm Beach Municipal Golf Course, located at 7001 Parker Avenue. The City had issued RFP No. 16-17-209 for lease and development of up to 196 acres of property including the West Palm Municipal Golf Course and reviewed the three proposals it had received. The City is now moving forward with entering into a contract with West Palm Beach Golf Links.

West Palm Beach Golf Links’ plan promises to create:

  • A premier golf course honoring the original Dick Wilson design, with a sympathetic restoration of the course.
  • A family entertainment and hospitality venue to be developed by Topgolf (Activities would include a casual golf experience with a restaurant and a 3000 sq. ft. social gathering space for residents, tourists and events. The hotel is anticipated to be a five story, 80 – 100 room, 3+ Star facility.).
  • A mix of appropriate residential development.
  • 600+ new jobs.
  • Significant new revenues for the City.
  • Improved golf maintenance facility.
  • C-51 Canal access area and sculling venue.

“This project could really be a game changer for West Palm Beach’s south end,” said West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio. “I am really pleased that, now, we will have something that’s really going to energize people—young and old, residents and visitors-- around our golf course. I’m excited to move forward with West Palm Beach Golf Links, as their proposal gives us a chance to do something really innovative and creative with our municipal golf course.”

Proposed terms, plus financial and development impacts include:

  • City continues to own the land being developed.
  • City relieved of all financial obligations concerning the golf course.
  • Developer funds 100% of the estimated $86,000,000 development costs and 100% of all operating costs.
  • 600+ new jobs.
  • Estimated financial impact to City: $52,000,000 in value.

“We view this project as a significant opportunity to return this golf course to the world class status it has previously enjoyed,” stated John Sanford, West Palm Beach Golf Links golf architect, during the presentation before the Special Golf Commission. “Anything less would not do it justice.”

The proposal also promises:

  • Guaranteed affordable access for West Palm Beach Resident Pass Holders. Player development programs and leagues, including Inner City Youth Golf Association and The First Tee.
  • Forest Hill and Dreyfoos High Schools golf team home course status for practice and matches.
  • Land for additional parking for Forest Hill High School.

The West Palm Beach Golf Links proposal presented before the Special Golf Commission is, again, a concept. The City is now moving forward with entering into a contract with West Palm Beach Golf Links, which will be brought before the Commission and for public comment.

Mayor Muoio, Strong Towns Founder Chuck Marohn to Host Curbside Chat

Public Invited to Special Presentation on Building a Prosperous WPB with Improved Quality of Life

You’re invited to the Curbside Chat, with Mayor Jeri Muoio and Strong Towns Founder Chuck Marohn on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 from 5:30pm – 7pm at the Flagler Gallery at City Hall located at 401 Clematis Street in West Palm Beach! Marohn, whose organization teaches communities how to be more financially resilient through smart planning and infrastructure use, will lead a public presentation about how cities and neighborhoods can grow stronger by taking incremental, data-responsive, community-driven steps through the work of strong citizens. Hear how we can leverage our transportation and mobility plan to strengthen our community and how we can improve our City’s overall quality of life, a key priority of Mayor Jeri Muoio. A Q&A will follow. This event is FREE and open to the public.

Mr. Marohn, named one of the 10 Most Influential Urbanists of all time, is a noted professional engineer and certified planner. He is the lead author of "Thoughts on Building Strong Towns" as well as the author of "A World Class Transportation System". He has presented the Strong Towns concepts in hundreds of cities and towns across North America. Strong Towns concepts include:

  • Strong cities, towns and neighborhoods cannot happen without strong citizens (people who care).
  • Local government is a platform for strong citizens to collaboratively build a prosperous place.
  • Financial solvency is a prerequisite for long term prosperity.
  • Land is the base resource from which community prosperity is built and sustained. It must not be squandered.
  • A transportation system is a means of creating prosperity in a community, not an end unto itself.
  • Job creation and economic growth are the results of a healthy local economy, not substitutes for one.

“We are delighted to host Chuck Marohn for this special presentation,” said West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio. “There are many people in our community who care deeply about our City and its future, and this presentation will surely generate some ideas and insights for future collaboration on building a prosperous city with an emphasis on overall quality of life.”

“For the United States to be a prosperous country, it must have strong cities, towns and neighborhoods. Enduring prosperity for our communities cannot be artificially created from the outside but must be built from within, incrementally over time,” said Marohn.

The Curbside Chat is for anyone who wants to make change in their communities. The changes are from the bottom up – assuring average citizens will have impact.

Thank you WPB Volunteers!

More than 200 volunteers provide support to the City of West Palm Beach. You may have met them in our library, cleaning up after last year's hurricane, leading guided tours at Grassy Waters and much, much more. These very special individuals were recognized at a breakfast hosted by our City Commission on Friday. Receiving extra special recognition was Ricky Aiken of InnerCity Innovators for his work inspiring young people to be the change they want to see in our community. From the bottom of our hears, thank you WPB volunteers!

STUDENTS INVITED TO JOIN

MAYOR’S YOUTH COUNCIL

The Mayor's Youth Council, coordinated by Kevin Jones (left), at Florida League of Cities

Calling all students! Applications are now open for the next Mayor’s Youth Council.

The Mayor’s Youth Council was created by Mayor Jeri Muoio in 2014 to develop and mentor future leaders. The Council is comprised of high school students of all ages who meet monthly to learn about government workings and the importance of community service.

The Council:

  • Provides students an opportunity to learn about municipal government;
  • Organizes neighborhood youth meetings to discuss problems, needs and suggested improvements;
  • Advises the City on activities for and by teens who conduct volunteer programs and give ideas to the City;
  • Participates in community service activities and the Summer Engagement Program.

Participating students must reside in and attend school in West Palm Beach. As Dreyfoos School of the Arts and Palm Beach Lakes High School are already well represented on the Mayor’s Youth Council, students from Cardinal Newman High School, Oxbridge Academy and Forest Hill High School are especially encouraged to apply.

For more information, contact Kevin L. Jones, Coordinator of Community Initiatives at kljones@wpb.org or call (561) 822-1413.

FLAGLER SHORE SCHEDULED TO END ON MARCH 1

The City of West Palm Beach wants to ensure that residents have the correct updates about the plans for Flagler Shore.

Recently, a series of private emails and texts containing inaccurate information about the City’s Flagler Shore pilot project have created some new questions.

Flagler Shore was designed to temporarily reduce Flagler Drive between Banyan Boulevard and Lakeview Avenue to reclaim 63,000 square feet of public space for the public benefit.

In the interest of transparency and accuracy, the City wishes to share with you these important facts about the project:

  • The Flagler Shore project will end, and all four lanes of Flagler Drive will reopen on March 1. As in past years, Flagler Drive may temporarily close for private events including the Boat Show and Sunfest.
  • Despite inaccurate reports to the contrary, no public dollars are being allocated to continue to fund the Flagler Shore project.
  • Flagler Shore has been successful in starting the dialogue about how best to utilize the City’s public spaces and was a part of Mayor Jeri Muoio‘s initiative to study how to improve the overall quality of life across the City.
  • While there are plans to study the reports and review the results of the Flagler Shore project, it is not listed as one of Mayor’s top priorities.

This is the plan and has always been the plan.

We’ve learned a lot about how our residents value our public spaces. Project managers are compiling a report, which will be made public and shared with everyone once the project is complete.

We thank everyone who has participated in the project and has taken the time to provide us their feedback and comments!

  • Mar. 1 at 8:00 AM - Flagler Drive will reopen as a four-lane road

Kick-off and Wrap-up Spring Break Week with the City of West Palm Beach

Free community event offerings to expand during March; City encourages residents and visitors to “Hurry to Currie”

The City of West Palm Beach is encouraging residents and visitors to “Hurry to Currie” for two very special March events. The Palm Beach Post Spring Break Concert and a Spring Break Farmers Market, will bookend the week of Spring Break for Palm Beach County Public Schools, which is March 19 to March 23, at Currie Park, a beautiful site adjacent to the Intracoastal Waterway. The City of West Palm Beach’s award-winning events are always free and open to the public.

“We are excited about our ‘Hurry to Currie’ Spring Break promotion,” said Mary Pinak, Community Events Manager for the City of West Palm Beach Department of Parks and Recreation. “Normally in March, due to the excitement and success of the Palm Beach International Boat Show, we cancel our monthly Sunday on the Waterfront and one of our GreenMarkets. During Boat Show week this year, we decided to host a concert and farmers market a mile and a half north at our beautiful Currie Park on the Intracoastal Waterway, adjacent to the popular Northwood Village. What better time than Spring Break, when students and their families have a chance to enjoy even more time in West Palm Beach, especially before the heat of summer.”

Special “Hurry to Currie” Spring Break events include:

THE PALM BEACH POST SPRING BREAK CONCERT

Sunday, March 18, 2018

4 - 7 p.m. FREE | Currie Park, 2400 North Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach, FL 33401

Caribbean Chillers (Tribute to Jimmy Buffett) | http://www.caribbeanchillers.com/

This Palm Beach Post Sunday on the Waterfront may be changing its latitude, but certainly not its attitude! Guests are being asked, in the words of a Jimmy Buffett song, to “Take Another Road,” and head to Currie Park instead. Once there, the Caribbean Chillers, a Jimmy Buffett tribute band, will make concert goers feel like they are in “Margaritaville.” Under the sway of palm trees on the waterfront, Parrotheads will relax to sights and sounds that make this special event feel like a real Jimmy Buffett concert.  Bring your picnic basket, lawn chairs and blankets!

SPRING BREAK FARMERS MARKET

Sunday, March 24, 2018

9 a.m. –  1 p.m. FREE. | Currie Park, 2400 North Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach, FL 33401

During this special farmers market, guests are encouraged to shop from the more than 30 vendors featuring the freshest and most unique offerings, including local produce, plants, exotic flowers, herbs, baked goods, gourmet foods, teas, coffee, specialty pet products and much more.  The GreenMarket also features live music and free activities for kids.

In addition to the events listed, guests are welcome to enjoy Currie Park’s amenities, including a playground, tennis courts, a boat ramp into the intracoastal waterway, a memorial to the late Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr., plus plenty of open green space for a week of fun and relaxation.
