An Open Letter from Mayor Muoio

City Brings Forward New

Okeechobee Business District

Dear City Resident:

On September 25, 2017, the City of West Palm Beach City Commission will discuss the creation of a new Okeechobee Business District (OBD). This proposed district would include the properties located between Okeechobee Boulevard and Lakeview Avenue from Flagler Drive to Rosemary Avenue. The purpose of the OBD is to:

  • Strengthen the City’s Financial District and to encourage the development of sorely-needed Class A office developments. This would result in more jobs and the consolidation of this corridor as the main office district of the downtown;
  • Create an environment that would attract many of the national corporations that desire to be located in our City;
  • Provide incentives to encourage the preservation of landmark historic structures such as the First Church of Christ Scientist;
  • Continue the ongoing desire to retain and increase public open spaces along Flagler Drive and require no developments occur within 400 feet of the Intracoastal Waterway;
  • Maintain or reduce the development capacity for projects along this corridor to lower the number of vehicles traveling along Okeechobee Boulevard and Lakeview Avenue.

The overall development permitted within this corridor would not be increased. Instead, it would be reduced from what is allowed today. Height incentives might be offered to accomplish the goals outlined above while the amount of building would be REDUCED on two of the four blocks within the district. This would result in building capacity that would be reduced or remain the same as what is permitted today. Additionally, a reduced maximum parking requirement would be established to reduce the amount of vehicles within the district. A required contribution to the City’s trolley system and an increase in public open space would also be required of all developers along with a required Transportation Demand Management plan.

It is important to note that this proposed amendment does NOT impact ANY properties along the Flagler Waterfront District north of Lakeview Avenue.  The City is not suggesting that any properties north of the OBD be permitted to allow any increase in height or density, and I will NOT support any increases in height for any property in this district along Flagler Drive.

The preservation of the City’s waterfront is paramount, and I truly believe these changes will allow West Palm Beach to continue being a world class city.

Sincerely,

Jeri Muoio, Mayor

West Palm Beach CRA Named

Knight Arts Challenge Miami Finalist

Artist Lily Yeh and WPB CRA Executive Director Jon Ward held a

'Design Your Park' workshop with park designers, local artists and community members.

The City of West Palm Beach CRA was recently named a finalist in the 2017 Knight Arts Challenge Miami by the Knight Foundation. The agency was selected for its proposed art project in the City’s Historic Northwest District with world-renowned artist Lily Yeh.

The CRA plans to create a cultural hub in the community by having residents and community artists work with Yeh to create a block-long park across from the Sunset Lounge. Yeh visited West Palm Beach on Aug. 12 for a 'Design Your Park' workshop with the CRA, community members, local artists and architects to discuss ideas for the park.

The park is part of the CRA’s Historic Northwest Rising redevelopment project that will ultimately create an African American cultural tourism destination around the Sunset Lounge paying homage to the rich jazz and African American history of the area.

The park across from the Sunset Lounge in WPB’s Historic Northwest District will undergo a transformation to become a cultural sculpture park with input from the community and the design team: (l-r) Ivonne Sanchez - Design2Form Designer; Jon Ward – WPB CRA Executive Director; Joelle East - Design2Form Project Architect; Artist Lily Yeh; and Zamarr Brown – Design2Form Principal Architect.

Lily Yeh is an artist whose work has taken her to communities throughout the world. As founder and executive director of The Village of Arts and Humanities in North Philadelphia from 1968 to 2004, she helped create a national model in creative place-making and community building through the arts. In 2002, Yeh pursued her work internationally, founding Barefoot Artists, Inc., to bring the transformative power of art to communities  through participatory, multifaceted projects that foster community empowerment, improve the physical environment, promote economic development and preserve  art and culture. In addition to the United States, she has carried out projects in several other countries. She is the subject of the feature-length documentary film The Barefoot Artist. Yeh is the recipient of numerous awards and has been included in the Asian American Arts Centre's artasiamerica digital archive.

Fabled Tables to

Give Good Fortune to 25 Nonprofits

Aesop’s Tables to be auctioned off during Summer in Paradise

finale on Thursday, August 31

Heart and art will meet at the waterfront on Thursday, August 31, when the City of West Palm Beach takes its final “sip” of summer during Clematis by Night. Summer in Paradise (S.I.P), the annual summer-long promotion of free events, will go out with some good will, as the summer star of the show, Aesop’s Tables, will be auctioned off for charity. Aesop’s Tables is a whimsical art installation of 25 painted picnic tables, with each one depicting one of Aesop’s fables. Each table was painted by a local artist and has been assigned a corresponding charity beneficiary.

A direct tie to Mayor Jeri Muoio’s pledge declaring West Palm Beach as a City of Kindness, the storybook setting provides an opportunity for all to connect, explore local art, share their own stories and enjoy family-friendly activities on the West Palm Beach waterfront. Aesop’s Tables is presented by the City of West Palm Beach Art in Public Places and celebrates the talents of local artists. The tables feature depictions of “The Jay and the Peacock,” “Tortoise and the Hare,” “The Lion and the Mouse,” and more.

Just as Aesop’s fables have reached across centuries, continents and cultures, Aesop’s Tables invites visitors to enjoy light-hearted lessons, laughter and conversations on the waterfront. The summer-long outdoor art installation made its waterfront debut on Thursday, June 1, 2017 during the S.I.P kickoff at Clematis by Night.

“While the tables have already been an incredible success, the auction during the Summer in Paradise finale will be an additional opportunity to spread good will – and good fortune - in our community,” said Community Events Manager Mary Pinak. “If you have a cause – or a favorite table – come out! The live auction is sure to be exciting – and for twenty-five great local causes.”

Benefitting nonprofits include: Adopt-A-Family of the Palm Beaches, Inc., American Cancer Society-Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Autism Speaks, Children Seen and Heard, Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, Dress for Success Palm Beaches, Gulfstream Goodwill Industries, Habitat for Humanity, Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Palm Beach County, Legal Aid of Palm Beach County, Inc., Life’s Changes Palm Beach County, Inc., Little Smiles, Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches, Nonprofits First, Pathfinders Scholarship Fund, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, Quantum House, Resource Depot, Seagull Services, Sister Cities of Delray Beach, Inc., Susan G Komen South Florida, The Arc of Palm Beach County, The Take Heed Theater Company, Inc., United Way of Palm Beach County and Urban Youth Impact.

For more information about Summer in Paradise and the finale and auction on August 31, please visit www.wpb.org/events or call (561) 822-1515.

Flagler Memorial Bridge to Return to Normal Opening Schedule

According to FDOT, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has announced the Flagler Memorial Bridge has returned to its normal opening schedule. The Flagler Memorial Bridge is now opening for marine traffic twice an hour at 15 minutes past the hour and 45 minutes past the hour, including during morning and afternoon rush hours.

In November 2012, the USCG limited Flagler Memorial Bridge openings to once an hour and did not allow openings during the peak hours of 8:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. in response to construction of the replacement bridge. The restrictions were put in place to reduce traffic congestion. With four lanes of traffic now operating on the bridge, the USCG has rescinded those restrictions.

For more information about the Flagler Memorial Bridge Replacement Project, contact FDOT. Information can also be found on the project website: www.flaglerbridge.com.
