WPBFR Welcomes New Firefighter Recruits

Captain James Rothgery, Commissioner Paula Ryan, Commisioner Shanon Materio, Fire Chief Diana J. Matty, FF George DeMaria, FF David McCauley, FF David Arco, FF Justin Quiros, FF Stephanie Rosario, and Lieutenant Jeffrey Stefaniak.

The City of West Palm Beach announces the addition of five new recruits to West Palm Beach Fire Rescue (WPBFR). The recruits are graduates of the WPBFR class of 2017 and will now join the City’s team of 205 firefighters at nine fire stations.

The recruits are David Arco, George DeMaria, David McCauley, Justin Quiros, and Stephanie Rosario. The recruits are joining the city from other municipal or county public safety agencies or hospitals. After learning of opportunities with the City via social media, the recruits responded to a job posting seeking firefighters who already possessed the State of Florida Paramedic certification. Many other agency processes require only the Firefighter and Emergency Medical Training Certification.

"We are more than pleased with the performance of these five firefighters during their training,” said Chief Diana J. Matty. “We expect the same from the next class we hire. If you have heart and a strong work ethic, we want you to apply.”

The fact that most of the recruits left other area departments for the opportunity to work for WPBFR demonstrates that WPBFR enjoys an excellent reputation for professionalism and well-trained firefighters. This was the most common reason given by recruits when asked why they would leave another department to work for WPBFR.

The WPBFR recruit training program will now take the recruits from their first three months into their first year as a probationary firefighter. They are now on-shift and will continue their training in an on-duty capacity. The recruits will perform many practical firefighting and emergency medical services skill drills and take regular, written tests covering department procedures, rules, and regulations.  Recruits are also expected to commit all city streets to memory, another subject on which they will be regularly tested. At six months, they will have a major practical and written examination which must be passed in order to progress with their probationary employment. A comprehensive final exam after their first year. If this is passed, the recruit will no longer be a probationary firefighter and graduate to permanent duty status.

The City of West Palm Beach currently has openings for firefighters and is accepting applications online. Interested applicants can apply via the City website: http://wpb.org/Departments/Human-Resources/Home/I-want-to-work-for-the-City-of-West-Palm-Beach
