Massive one day community ‘Build a Playground” project this Saturday in West Palm Beach

Designed by kids, Built by Volunteers in a single massive one day community effort
Funds and support provided by Kaboom, National PAL, PNC Bank

When: Saturday, February 12 8:30AM-3:00PM
Where: Police Athletic League West Palm Beach, 720 Tamarind Ave.

Join Mayor Lois Frankel, the West Palm Beach City Commission, more than 200 volunteers from the community, PNC Bank, the Police Athletic League of West Palm Beach, the City of West Palm Beach, and organizers from KaBOOM! as they join forces on Saturday, Feb. 12 to build a new playground. The new playground’s design is based on drawings created by children who participated in a Design Day event in December.

Today’s kids spend less time playing outside than any previous generation in part because only 1-in-5 children live within walking distance of a park or playground. This Play Deficit is having profound consequences for kids physically as well as mentally and socially. KaBOOM! is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to saving play.

The new playground will provide hundreds of children in the West Palm Beach community with a safe place to play. Currently, the children in the neighborhood do not have a playground within walking distance to enjoy.

The playground is the fourth built by KaBOOM! and is one of more than 200 playgrounds the group will create in 2011 across America.

In addition to the community-built playground, the new play area will also include Imagination Playground in a Box – a breakthrough playspace concept designed to encourage child-directed, unstructured free play. Via manipulable loose parts and natural elements like sand and water, Imagination Playground in a Box allows children to constantly change their environment and design their own course of play.
