The City will hold a Special City Commission Meeting on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. in the Commission Chambers to select an appointee to fill the District # 5 seat. The persons who filed a Notice of Intent with the City Clerk’s office will be interviewed and then voted upon by the City Commission. Whomever is selected, will be sworn into office immediately.

Article II, Section 1.06 of the City Charter states that if a vacancy occurs in the office of the City Commission for any reason…the remaining members of the City Commission shall, within thirty (30) days of the creation of the vacancy and by a majority of a quorum, appoint a successor to fill the office vacated…provided, the successor so appointed to the office vacated shall be a resident of the district and a qualified elector of the City.

District # 5 Commissioner William Moss passed away March 28, 2012. A vacancy was created on April 5, 2012 when he did not assume office after being elected. In order to comply with the thirty (30) day opportunity afforded the Commission to appoint a successor, two advertisements were placed in the Palm Beach Post inviting interested parties to file a Notice of Interest with the City Clerk’s office. Additionally, the City Clerk’s Office placed the vacancy information and Notice of Interest form on the City’s website and was available in the City Clerk’s office.

As of April 24, 2012, three residents of District # 5 have submitted their Notice of Intent: Carol Roberts, Dr. Bernard Kimmel, and Don Chester. Interested persons must reside for at least six months in District # 5 and be a registered voter. The last date to submit a Notice of Intent is noon on Monday, April 30, 2012.
