Mayor Muoio Welcomes StartUp Weekend
July 17, 2014
(West Palm Beach, FL) – Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur?
The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?
Startup Palm Beach will host its second Startup Weekend, a global event for startup enthusiasts, tech experts and aspiring entrepreneurs held in 120 countries around the world each year, on July 18, 2014 through July 20, 2014 at Palm Beach Atlantic University.
“When a Harvard University study found West Palm Beach to be the top spot for entrepreneurs, events like StartUp Weekend are exactly the reason,” said West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio. “West Palm Beach is open for business, and open to business, whether you’re a hedge fund manager or a budding entrepreneur.”
Startup Palm Beach hosted its first Startup Weekend in November 2013 to a resounding success that led to the development of FunScout, a website and mobile application created by last year’s Startup Weekend West Palm Beach winner, Austin Pantaleo.
This global event gives budding startup entrepreneurs hands-on experience to find out if their ideas are viable, and to learn how to take those ideas from concept to completion.
Throughout the weekend, participants work together to create an innovative product or service to present to a panel of judges on the final evening of Startup Weekend.
Winners receive non-cash prizes from Google, a Startup Weekend global sponsor, and follow-up support from local entrepreneurs and potential investors. The event is open to developers, designers, marketers and anyone who has an idea.
“The enthusiasm and support surrounding the startup community in West Palm Beach is palpitating,” said Startup Palm Beach founder, Nicholas Mohnacky. “Startup Weekend provides aspiring entrepreneurs the opportunity to cultivate their creativity and potentially leave with a business prospect.”
Austin Pantaleo’s startup, FunScout, emerged as a direct result of Startup Weekend West Palm Beach. The website launches on July 18, 2014, which coincides with this year’s event. FunScout’s mobile application will launch in September 2014.
“Startup Weekend West Palm Beach was an incredible experience and provided the early validation, support and attention to bring my FunScout idea to life,” said Pantaleo.
