SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, assists or performs surveying duties and field data collection, may train or supervise entry-level surveyors; and performs related duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Which are not in any hierarchical order)
  1. Operates transit, level, and electronic surveyor and data collection instruments.
  2. Assists or performs computations and calculations for various projects.
  3. Prepares sketches for field notes in construction layouts and as-built.
  4. Marks off property lines.
  5. Sets survey stakes and points for contractors and other utility companies.
  6. Maintains inventory, equipment, supplies and assigned city vehicles.
  7. Clears brush and digs up survey points.
  8. Trains and directs entry-level surveyors and crew in supervisor’s absence.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of basic surveying methods, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of mathematics, trigonometry, and basic drafting principles.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of electronic surveying equipment.
  • Knowledge of reading and interpreting construction and engineering plans.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations, practices and procedures.
  • Skill in accurately sketching and recording field notes and computations.
  • Skill in recording and maintaining public files and records.
  • Skill in demonstrating and instructing entry-level skills and practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work involves long hours outside with exposure to loud noises, chemicals, toxic fumes, air and waterborne pathogens, and mechanical equipment during the clearing, surveying, and staking of construction sites. There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, sit, work in close proximity to vehicular traffic, lift equipment or materials (up to 50 pounds), and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. The City of West Palm Beach promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate’s degree from an accredited college with a major in Surveying or related field, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid Florida driver’s license is required.
