SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, assists in the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of radio and wireless equipment and wiring; and performs related duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (which are not in any hierarchical order)
  • Assists customers in purchasing radio and related equipment by reviewing plans, layouts, and service requirements; researches prices and sources; orders or assists the customer in ordering; and reviews, tests and inspects the system following installation; trains customers in system usage.
  • Troubleshoots and corrects problem subscriber’s units.
  • Installs support software on radio systems.
  • Installs, connects and tests wireless radio support equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of communications engineering.
  • Knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of telecommunications equipment and wiring.
  • Knowledge of common hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings or blueprints.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work involves moderate to heavy work in all types of weather. There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. The City of West Palm Beach promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or GED and five (5) years experience in troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of telecommunications systems, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid Florida driver’s license is required.
