SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, supervises and directs survey crew to obtain field data for a variety of departmental projects; prepares field notes for survey operations; serves the public by obtaining field data necessary for Survey and Engineering plan production; may perform related duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (which are not in any hierarchical order)
  • Oversees construction layout within public right-of-ways and properties.
  • Oversees acquisition of data in the field needed to prepare engineering drawings, plans and designs.
  • Oversees the establishment and maintenance of the municipal horizontal and vertical control systems.
  • Keeps and files notes, drawings, sketches and other information as related to survey records.
  • Preserves, locates and references various survey points and markers which may be lost due to construction.
  • Trains survey crew personnel.
  • Performs all other related duties as trained and assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of land surveying techniques and construction techniques.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations, practices and procedures.
  • Skills in mathematics and trigonometry.
  • Ability to work outdoors under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to supervise and direct the work activities of others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the general public.
  • Ability to follow complex instructions with minimum detail
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed mostly in field settings. Considerable outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites, or public works facilities. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions; exposed to hot, wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is exposed to fumes and airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is exposed to heavy traffic, underbrush, insects’ bites, etc. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to very loud noise. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate testing instruments, computers and various pieces of office equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use repetitive motions of the wrists, hands and/or fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crawl, talk ,hear, kneel, push, pull, lift, finger and grasp. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10-25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to operate a vehicle as needed. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma, GED, or vocational training and four (4) years experience in a related field required, or equivalent combination of training and experience. Associate's degree in a related field, highly desirable. .A valid Florida driver’s license is required. A valid driver’s license from any state (equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application; with the ability to obtain the State of Florida driver’s license within 30 days from day of appointment.
