Youth Empowerment Center
Youth Empowerment Centers (YEC) are located at Gaines Park and Pleasant City. YECs incorporates teen specific programs for teens 12 – 19 years old. These facilities feature a multipurpose building for programs and activities, Audio Video & Recording Labs, Computer labs, playground area, gymnasium and outdoor basketball courts. When West Palm Beach, like many urban cities nationwide, began experiencing an escalation of youth gun violence, the City partnered with the Palm Beach County Criminal Justice Commission and a host of service providers to create a facility specially designed for teens.
We opened the YEC in 2007, since then have enrolled over 900 area teens in educational and recreational programs including computer use, design and construction; tutoring; FCAT prep; audio/video production; substance abuse education; teen pregnancy prevention; intramural basketball and flag football; talent competitions; gang prevention; job readiness and training. We hold job fairs, offer career planning, college tours and a place to just hang out. The center is open Monday through Saturday – with a game room that includes gymnasiums, X-Box 360, billiards, ping pong, card tables; Wii and other activities. Come check us out!
