Flood Hazard Area: Some properties within the City of West Palm Beach are located within the "Special Flood Hazard Area", and may be vulnerable during heavy storms to flooding due to heavy rains and east winds. To find out whether you live in a Flood Zone, visit the City Library, or contact the Construction Services Department at 805-6700. For additional information, visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency Flood Information Site at http://www.fema.gov/business/guide/section3c.shtm
Flood Insurance and Home Protection: Since homeowners or renters insurance policies do not cover losses due to flooding, the City strongly urges you to buy flood insurance to protect yourself from potentially devastating losses. West Palm Beach participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, making flood insurance available to everyone in the City. Contact your insurance agent for information. When flooding occurs, moving furniture to a higher level or placing sandbags can slow floodwaters from damaging your possessions. Retrofitting can minimize damage from occurring. This involves building flood walls, elevating the structure, etc. Information on retrofitting flood prone structures is available in the City Library or the Construction Services Department. Flood Certificates are kept on file in the Construction Services Department, and copies are available for download from the chart to the right.
Drainage System Maintenance: The City has a system of drainage channels and ditches for stormwater management. These facilities are maintained by our Engineering and Public Works Department, and are of vital importance since the water flowing through them drains not only our City, but inland areas as well. State law prohibits the dumping of any materials in these waterways. Violations should be reported to the Police Department at 837-4000.
When Flooding is Predicted: Be prepared. Have battery operated flashlight, radio and television in working order. Have a small bag of essentials ready in case of evacuation order. Know your evacuation zone and route to shelter. Listen for flood warnings, and heed notices to evacuate. And above all, remain calm.
