A CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
City of West Palm Beach Historic Preservation Awards – 2011

 Have you been admiring an improvement made to a neighbor’s historic property? Wondering if a house is new or historic because it is so compatible? Here is your chance to acknowledge their work. To celebrate National Historic Preservation month, the City of West Palm Beach Historic Preservation Division would like to recognize exceptional preservation efforts in our community. We need your help. Remember: no project is too small! Self-nominations welcome. Please submit completed nomination forms, for projects meeting the minimum criteria, to the City of West Palm Beach Historic Preservation Division no later than May 20, 2011.

 Categories:

  •  RehabilitationAcknowledges the proper rehabilitation of a structure according to the Secretary of Interior’s Standards. Project may include additions, interior renovations, or exterior improvements that respect the historic integrity of the structure.
  •  

  • Infill DesignAcknowledges appropriate infill within Historic Districts that essentially “fills in the gap” of an historic streetscape. Infill should be compatible in massing, size, scale, and architectural features with the district.
  •  

  • Craftsmanship/“Handyman”Recognizes a traditional technique or method of construction that is considered artistic and rare in today’s practices. This may include intricate wood working, hand turned wrought-iron work, hand-carving of architectural elements. The category is also suited to recognize the “handyman” who has appropriately repaired distinguishing features of a structure (i.e. wood windows, doors, etc.).
  •  

  • Service -Recognizes an organization or individual who has clearly made an impact on the community through advocacy or service in historic preservation.
  •  

Minimum Criteria for Eligibility:

  • Property must be within the boundaries of a designated Historic District or listed on the West Palm Beach Register of Historic Places.
  • Project must have been completed within the last 5 years.

 Judging:

The Historic Preservation Board Members will act as the judging panel. The winners will be announced at the May 24, 2011 meeting.  All awards will be based on the quality, significance and uniqueness of the project.
