OWA-HEE WATERWAY EXPLORATION: Many canoe trails meander through our Freshwater Marsh. One of them leads to the Owahee Waterway, a manmade channel that parallels the Owahee Trail. On this trip, we will experience the watery pathways of both. First we paddle through the shallow waters of the Marsh, skirting tree islands and enjoying vistas that stretch to the horizon. Then we enter the Owahee Waterway, where the water deepens and the vista narrows. Foliage on either side seems to direct our journey. Here uplands and wetlands come together to form a diverse habitat. We watch the reflection of trees on the water and birds taking flight as we paddle back to journey's end.
Ages: 9 years old and up
Date: Saturday, December 9
Time: 9:00 am - 12:30 pm
Fees: $15 adult, $5 child
Location: S. Side

AFTERNOON DELIGHT: We leave the Nature Center in the late afternoon, enjoying the Marsh as daylight slowly gives way to twilight. As the shadows lengthen, we observe many species of birds flying overhead, making their way home to roost. Finally, we, too, must make our way back under the multihued skies of a Florida sunset.
Ages: 9 years old and up
Date: Wednesdays, December 6;
Time: 2:30 pm – 5:30 pm

CITY COMPLETES 2ND PHASE OF ERADICATION OF EXOTIC SPECIES AT APOXEE PARK
The City of West Palm Beach has recently completed the second phase of treatment and removal of over 100 acres of invasive, exotic vegetation at the City’s Apoxee Preserve. Apoxee (pronounced ‘Ah-po-ee’) is the first of the City of West Palm Beach’s urban wilderness parks. Apoxee, which means “Beyond Tomorrow” in the Miccosukee language, represents one of a series of planned parks within the region’s urban wilderness parks system, set aside for preservation, environmental education, and public enjoyment. Particularly unique to Apoxee are its coordination with many agencies to carry out plans to remove invasive exotics vegetation, and to use its wetlands to provide a new water supply (maximum 10 million gallons per day). This innovative water supply system is a plan to achieve both urban and environmental water sustainability.

The City’s Water Resources Division successfully completed a second phase of treatment and removal of over 100 acres of invasive, exotic vegetation in August of 2005. City contractors primarily removed Melaleuca along with other species such as Australian Pine, Brazilian Pepper, and Old World Climbing Fern. The City’s commitment of staff and resources to conduct an ongoing invasive, exotic vegetation program and the environmental education outreach at Apoxee was matched with a grant from Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management’s Public Land Grant Program.

Along with the City of West Palm Beach, many agencies were involved with and contributed to the completion of Apoxee Park. These agencies include: Florida Department of Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Greenways & Trails; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Region 4); Florida Communities Trust; Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management; and the South Florida Water Management District.

The environmental education outreach will be offered through the City’s Grassy Waters Preserve. Interpretive guides will offer interpretive nature walks. Ongoing programs and exhibits will be offered periodically to include information about invasive exotic plants, beneficial native wildlife plants, threatened bromeliads, and plans to recover water through Apoxee’s wetlands system.

Apoxee Park is located on Jog Road, 1 mile north of Okeechobee Blvd. (Park entrance is on the west side of Jog Road). For more information, contact Grassy Waters Preserve at 561/627-8831.

GRAND OPENING AND DEDICATION OF APOXEE PARK
On Saturday, June 12, 2004, West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel, City Commission President Kimberly Mitchell and fellow Commissioners James Exline, William Moss, Raymond Liberti and Ike Robinson Jr. performed a ribbon-cutting ceremony & grand opening ceremony for this incredible new Park.

Apoxee (pronounced 'Ah-po-ee') is the first of the City of West Palm Beach's urban wilderness parks. Apoxee, which means "Beyond Tomorrow" in the Miccosukee language, represents one of a series of planned parks within the region's urban wilderness parks system, set aside for preservation and public enjoyment. Particularly unique to Apoxee are the plans to use its wetlands to provide a new water supply (maximum 10 million gallons per day) in order to achieve both urban and environmental water sustainability!

The City of West Palm Beach would like to thank the following agencies who contributed to the completion of the park: Florida Department of Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Greenways & Trails; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Region 4); Florida Communities Trust; Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management; and the South Florida Water Management District.
