33-year-old James “J-Bo” Gaines was arrested and transported to the Palm Beach County Jail this morning in connection with an early morning armed kidnapping and robbery of a 23-year-old man. The victim was riding his bicycle home from work shortly after 2:30 a.m., when he was approached by Gaines, in the 700-block of North Tamarind Avenue. Gaines was armed with a .38 caliber revolver and demanded money from the victim; the victim surrendered $35.00. At gunpoint, Gaines then ordered the victim to move to a secluded location where the victim was ordered to undress; Gaines searched the victim’s clothes for additional items of value and fled with the victim’s money, bicycle, backpack, and cellular telephone. Officers responding to the victim’s 911 call observed Gaines in the area; he fled and threw marijuana upon sight of the police presence. Gaines was apprehended, arrested, and identified. Officers recovered some of the victim’s property in the vicinity of the arrest. During an interview with detectives, Gaines placed himself in the area of the crimes but denied involvement. Gaines was charged with armed kidnapping, robbery with a firearm, aggravated assault with a firearm, possession of marijuana less than 20 grams, and tampering with evidence.
