The West Palm Beach Water Plant is undergoing several up-dates to improve service to our customers. These up-grades include the installation of a new water filter system. The filter system is the final step in the water purification process. These new filters are of the Granulated, Activated Carbon (GAC) type and are superior to the multi-media filters currently in use.
Contractors are submitting bids to undertake the filter improvement process. We expect the filter implementation project to begin by mid April 06 and take approximately eighteen months to complete.
We are conducting a pilot study to evaluate potential gains that may result from changing our water treatment process from a Lime Softening procedure to an Enhanced Coagulation system, which should help us meet more stringent regulatory compliance standards, improve the odor, taste and color of our water. If the test substantiates our beliefs, we will implement the new processs.
When the Enhanced Coagulation study is completed, the Water Plant will run pilot programs to test the effectiveness of Ultra Violet Disinfection and Ozone Oxidation. Both processes will improve water odor, color, and taste. We will implement the most effective process or combination of processes when the tests are completed.
In addition to the attention directed to the water purification process, Mayor Frankel has championed the purchase of two, two-thousand Kilowatt generators. Each generator is capable of powering the Water Plant individually. Having two generators on-hand gives us safety through redundancy.
The generators have arrived from the manufacturer and are being tied into the Water Plant power grid. Should we loose power without warning, we can have the new generators up and running within fifteen seconds. This allows us to continue providing service. We can make scheduled transfers of power from Florida Power to our own generators seamlessly.
