City of WPB Advises Residents to Prepare for Potential Flooding During King Tides

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – The City of West Palm Beach is issuing a proactive advisory to its residents, encouraging preparedness for potential coastal flooding during the annual King Tides that occur each fall. The first of five King Tides takes place this week, Thursday, Sept. 19, through Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024.

King Tides are higher-than-normal tides that typically last around three hours and normally occur during the fall — on or around a full moon. While we do not expect widespread flooding, there is potential for localized flooding, so we want residents to be aware, prepare, and stay vigilant. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts the highest tide during this first King Tide will reach 4.16 feet at the Port of West Palm Beach around 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024. The Port of Palm Beach is located just north of the Manatee Lagoon.

The other King Tides in West Palm Beach are expected to occur on:

  • October 16, 2024 (full moon October 17, 2024)

  • October 20, 2024

  • November 14, 2024 & November 15 (full moon) through November 16, 2024

Considering these predicted conditions, the City of West Palm Beach recommends the following precautions:

  1. Stay informed: Keep an eye on local news, weather forecasts, and official City communications for the latest updates on weather conditions and potential flooding.

  2. Exercise caution while driving: While roads are not expected to flood, exercise caution while driving during heavy rain. Reduce speed and increase following distance to maintain control in slippery conditions. When approaching a flooded road, it is best to remember the saying: “Don’t drown, turn around.”

The City of West Palm Beach is actively monitoring the King Tides, and our emergency response teams are prepared to address any potential flooding or other emergencies that may arise. While flooding is not anticipated, we urge residents to stay informed and exercise caution during this period of potential flood risk.
