The City of West Palm Beach Urges Residents to Prepare for the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – With the onset of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season drawing near, the City of West Palm Beach is reminding residents of the critical importance of readiness in the face of potential storms. While we remain hopeful for a calm season, it is imperative to be fully prepared for any eventuality. The season, spanning from June 1 to Nov. 30, 2024, is when tropical storms and hurricanes are anticipated to form in the Atlantic.

The City is steadfastly gearing up to tackle potential storms and stands poised to respond swiftly if required. Residents are strongly encouraged to stay abreast of local news and weather updates and to proactively devise an action plan.

“We are dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of West Palm Beach, and we implore you to prepare alongside us,” stated West Palm Beach Mayor Keith A. James. “Complacency is not an option. Understanding your risk, preparing, and staying informed are fundamental steps you can take to ready yourself for hurricane season.”

To ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones, consider these hurricane preparedness tips:

  • Assess Your Risk: Understand how rainfall, wind, and flooding might affect your area. This knowledge is key to initiating preparations promptly.

  • Know your Evacuation Zone: Familiarize yourself with your designated evacuation zone to facilitate swift action in the event of an evacuation order.

  • Stock Up on Supplies: Ensure an ample supply of food, water, and other necessities to sustain every member of your household for at least 72 hours. Consider any specific needs such as provisions for pets, seniors, and prescription medications.

  • Develop an Emergency Plan: Ensure that all members of your household are well-versed in your hurricane preparedness plan. Establish a comprehensive family communication strategy.

  • Stay Informed: Identify reliable sources of information for updates during a hurricane event. Regularly check the City’s website wpb.org for updates and subscribe to the Insider Newsletter. In case of emergency, contact the Mayor’s Response Hotline at (561) 822-2222 (TTY 800-955-8771). For immediate assistance, dial 9-1-1.

  • Review Insurance Coverage: Scrutinize your insurance policy, verify adequate coverage, and understand any exclusions. Reach out to your insurance agent for any necessary adjustments.

  • Special Needs & Pet Shelters: Pre-registration with Palm Beach County is essential. Contact (561) 712-6400 (TTY 561-712-6342) for further information.
