April is Water Conservation Month: WPB encourages water customers to conserve

Palm Beach County is currently suffering severe and extreme drought. WPB strongly encourages enhanced water conservation measures and compliance

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (April 23, 2025)- The City of West Palm Beach Department of Public Utilities encourages year-round water conservation measures to protect water resources and, as part of Water Conservation Month, joins the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) in raising awareness about water conservation. 2025 is the 27th anniversary since April was designated as Water Conservation Month in Florida.

The National Drought Mitigation Center has identified South Florida as having a severe and extreme drought. Drought is defined as a moisture deficit bad enough to have social, environmental, or economic effects. According to the Drought Center, dry weather has “led to stress in crops and other vegetation and increased wildfire danger.”

South Florida, including City of West Palm Beach water customers, remains under strict irrigation guidelines for water customers issued by the SFWMD.  The year-round guidelines restrict watering to two days per week.

The restrictions include the following:

  • Watering of lawns only two days per week between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.
  • Even-numbered addresses or other locations without an address may irrigate only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Sundays.
  • Property owners may apply no more than ¾ inch to 1 inch of water per week on their lawns and landscapes.

Plants may be watered at any time using hand-watering rain barrels, cisterns, and other low-volume irrigation methods. The order does not limit irrigation using treated reclaimed water. To read the order, please visit  Landscape Irrigation and Water Conservation  Nearly half of the residential water use is used for irrigation.
