WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (November 14, 2019) –
Following their recent display of bravery and quick-thinking, Mayor Keith James recognized four Department of Public Works Sanitation Division employees with the City’s STAR (Staff Appreciation and Recognition) Award: Equipment Operator James Parrish, Supervisor Patrick Aceti, Equipment Operator Randolph Rampersad and Operator Marquelle Reed.

As Parrish and Reed followed their usual daily route, they noticed that their vehicle had caught on fire. Remaining calm, they pulled into a large, unoccupied parking lot along Palm Beach Lakes Blvd. and dumped the sanitation truck’s cargo. They discovered that the fire was the result of flammable material that had been improperly disposed and quickly contacted the West Palm Beach Fire Department which put out the fire. Thanks to Parrish’s and Reed’s immediate action, they were able to prevent major damage or injury to themselves, those in proximity and the sanitation truck itself.

Once the situation was de-escalated, Aceti and Rampersad joined the pair to make sure the area was once again cleared for community use. Sanitation Superintendent Leon Pinder nominated the group for their courage, commitment to their roles and exemplifying behavior that exceeds the call of duty.

“It is my honor to present each of these team members with a STAR Award,” said Mayor James. “From the bottom of my heart, I am so thankful for the emergency management these gentlemen demonstrated during this incident.”

The STAR Award recognizes and rewards the diligent efforts of City employees who provide outstanding quality services to the community and demonstrate exemplary behaviors and skills. Recipients continuously go out of their way to help others and participate in a team effort to make our city better.
